Rios is a boss from R-Type II and awaits at the end of the 4th stage. This large high-speed tank attacks by shooting a 5-way laser burst from it's weak spot "eye" when it opens and missiles from 2 canons that move back and forth by the eye. There are 2 types of missiles: slow, destructible homing missiles and fast, unstoppable drills that go through walls. The gimmick of typical Rios battles is that they take place in high-speed levels where players have to constantly dodge the terrain. POW Armors also appear offering power-ups, but grabbing speed-ups is ill-advised as it makes easier to crash into walls. Despite Rios' size and considering how difficult it is to line up direct shots due to constant fire and wall-evasion, it can be quickly destroyed with unrelenting attack.

It's one of the forms of the Phantom Cell in the 5th stage boss rush. Its tank treads are replaced with thrusters as this battle takes place in the air. There is no terrain to contend with, but that makes this battle harder in some ways. The drills are faster as there are no walls to slow them down or for the lasers and homing missiles to crash into, which often return when they go off-screen behind the player. It is harder to line up shots with the eye the closer the canons get because that space will be taken up by enemy fire.

In the higher difficulty, it's purple, has more HP, attacks much more frequently, and the missiles are faster and fired randomly instead of 2 homing or 2 drills.
