R-Type Final 2 (Japanese: アール・タイプ ファイナルツー, Hepburn: Āru Taipu Fainaru Tsū), is a game developed by Granzella Inc. for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S (via Xbox Smart Delivery), Nintendo Switch and PC, released in April 2021, and also the New Update Version Announcement R-Type Final 3 Evolved for the PlayStation 5 released in March or April 2023, It is the newest title in the R-Type franchise and the first one in ten years since R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate.
Description[]
R-Type Final 2 presents itself as a collection of war memories, research, and records. It explicitly follows Operation Last Dance, and the culmination of the R-99 Last Dancer. Interestingly, the pilot's name defaults to Jade Ross, the commander of R-Type Command, who is only otherwise name-dropped in Operation Bitter Chocolate. Reading into the context, Jade Ross could also be the pilot from the original R-Type.
The game is very heavy on customization; building on the basic color customization of R-craft in Final, Final 2 possesses customization options for not only colors, but adds ship decals, a player model with customizable gender, suits, colors, and poses, and even a photo mode for the pilot and a chosen R-craft. Achieving any ending also unlocks the ability to customize the title-screen's name and stage courses. Stage names can also be changed.
Some ships from the Tactics entries also appear as unplayable background elements in stage 1, and play a more direct role in stage 7.1.
Story[]
Mission Brief[]
From the the R Manual:
Humanity has developed many weapons over the course of the Bydo invasion.
The Force, a truly indestructible weapon, realized through a convergence of harvested Bydo. The Wave Cannon, a weapon with the destructive power of a battleship's primary weapon, yet capable of being installed onto small-sized crafts.
A variety of Missiles, each developed to compliment the special characteristics of individual crafts. And the Bit, an artificial Force created to assist craft with an offensive defense.
The previous military operation, Last Dance, was initiated with the goal of developing a craft able to utilized all of theses weapons-the Ultimate Interchangeable Fighter. And once realized, humanity successfully struck the source of the Bydo.
The objectives of the current mission, R-TYPE FINAL 2, are to compile the military history of the war between humanity and the Bydo, and to pass down the know-how for anti-Bydo weapon development.
Yet unpublished military records and war memories are required over the course of this compilation. As new war records are still being discovered, we foresee that mission will stretch over a long period of time.
And so, in recognition of their achievements, those who complete a certain amount of compilation work in relation to this mission will be given the right to change the provisional "R-TYPE FINAL 2" title.
Over and out.
Craft History[]
A series of documents called Craft History can be viewed on the R Manual. As of November 25th, 2021, 16 Fighter biographies are available, with plans to double that number in the forthcoming update.
Game System[]
Difficulty[]
There are 7 levels of difficulty. The first five are available by default: PRACTICE, KIDS, NORMAL, BYDO, R-TYPER. The last two are unlockable:
- R-TYPER 2 is unlocked when Stage 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 is cleared once on R-TYPER difficulty.
- R-TYPER 3 is unlocked when Stage 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 is cleared once on R-TYPER 2 difficulty.
Apart from the Main Course, R-TYPER 2 and 3 difficulty can also be unlocked by clearing Stage 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 once on the respective difficulty in the Score Attack mode.
On PRACTICE difficulty, the fighter always starts with a Level 1 Force even when respawned from crashing.
Score System[]
The score modifier (as shown at the top right corner of the screen) is affected by the following factors:
- Difficulty (LV1-7)
- Rank (0-11)
- The base rank is 0.
- Each Laser Crystal increases the rank by 1 (up to 3).
- Reaching 100% Dose increases the rank by 1, and using a Special Weapon decreases the rank by 1.
- The rank is gradually increased as time goes by in the stage (up to 11).
- Entering the next stage resets the rank to 0-4, based on the current Laser and Dose levels.
- The maximum score modifier is +200% at LV7 (R-TYPER 3) Rank 11.
The player won't get score from time out during a boss battle.
Stages[]
R-Type Final 2 Main Course[]
Stages 1-5 are always the same (unless changed through Course Editing). The last two stages are determined by what item pilots pick up from the enemy Junction in Stage 4.0 & 5.0, who drops four items when it appears. Picking up the gray object appears to lead to the same route as not picking up any of the objects at all.
R-Type Final 3 Evolved Main Course[]
R-Type Final 3 Evolved is a "sequel" to Final 2 exclusive to the Playstation 5 as of now. Stages were fully revealed on the 24/02/2023 Granzella Gathering Stream.

Additionally, a Desert-Variant Birashins bulb is present. |

Diverging paths are available via the Traffic Control Beacon. Going upwards triggers a blue beacon and takes you through the upper reaches of the facility. Going down triggers a red one, and allows the pilot to mount their assault from the bottom bay. Finally, going between triggers both beacons and allows an offensive to be executed through the center of the fortress. |

Y7.0 | Bio-Cavity | Creature Cave
(R-Type) |
Estoras Gomander | Set 6
2022/2/24 |

The boss battle changes depending on the player's craft: the R-99 Last Dancer is the boss when not being used by the player, and if it is being used, then the R-9A Arrowhead is the boss, just like in the original Summer Twilight stage. The R-99 changes between four different Forces (Standard Force, Life Force, Fire Force & Standard Force H) until the end phase, where an Anchor Force DX appears and a Giga Wave Cannon charges, which will kill the player if it fires. |
Score Attack Mode[]
In Score Attack mode, every individual stage can be played as long as they have been unlocked via clearing them in the Main/Homage Stages Course once. When playing an individual stage in the Score Attack Mode, the player's fighter starts with full powerups (Level 3 Laser of choice, Level 2 Missile, and 2 Bit Devices). Continues are not available in this mode even via detailed difficulty settings.
The player can also create an Original Course by arranging the stages (including Homage Stages) they've completed in any order, the only restriction being that the Final Mission can only be set to a stage that serves as a finale normally (7.0, 7.1, 7.2, X7.0, Y7.0, Z7.0, Z7.1 with 3 stage volumes present) and, conversely, these stages can't be set as non-final missions. Up to ten Original Courses can be saved. Special rules and restrictions of Score Attack do not apply here.
Ships[]
Like in R-Type Final, the three starter fighters are R-9A Arrowhead, R-9D Shooting Star and R-9F Andromalius. Unlike the unlock methods in R-Type Final, R-Crafts are now crafted using Solonium, Etherium, and Bydogen, much like in the Tactics entries. These elements are earned through normal gameplay (higher difficulty comes with more rewards), though they can also be purchased in the in-game shop (albeit being limited quantities) using currency also earned from playing. Some ships require passwords and gameplay progression to unlock as well. Passwords of R-9A3 Lady Love and R-9B Strider have been announced on the R-Type Final 2 Kickstarter page.
Up to 12 fighters can be registered to use in the Hangar, with 60 more available on stand-by to replace any given slot in the R Craft Album.
At Launch, several fighters were available from various series, but only a total of 54 were available for research and play. Version 1.0.5 (Console) and Version 1.0.3 (PC) Introduced the TP-2 POW Armor, with the TP-2S Cyber Nova. TP-2M Frogman, and TP-2H Pow Armor II Coming shortly thereafter in Version 1.0.6 (Console, and 1.0.4 (PC). The R-90 Ragnarok, R-9ER Powered Silence, R-9ER2 Unchained Silence , and TP-3 Mr. Heli were then distributed in Version 1.0.7/1.0.8
With the launch of Version 1.0.7 (PS4) a total of 62 fighters were playable and unlockable, with the addition of the R-13B Charon, TL-2A Achilleus, TL-2A2 Neoptolemos, TL-2B Herakles, TL-2B2 Hyllos, OF-1 Daedalus, OFX-2 Valkyrie, OF-3 Garuda, OFX-4 Songoku, and OF-5 Kaguya. It had been revealed that the missing fighters will be added as free updates: the rest mech ships (except R-902 Ragnarok II), and BX-T Dantalion were set to drop in Early Summer, with the Bydo Series, Ultimate Fighters, and R-902 Ragnarok II, as well as "New Fighters" scheduled to be implemented in Late Summer.
It took until November 25th, 2021, for the the Mech series, OF Series, and R-13B to be released for all consoles. The first half of the Bydo series was set for release in "Mid October ~ Early November", and the rest of the Final 1 craft were scheduled for "Late November ~ Early December", but neither saw release, and the "New Fighters" listing has been removed from the roadmap entirely.
The next ship-containing update wouldn't be until the launch of DLC Set 5, and contained from the BX-T Dantalion, up to the BX-2 Platonic Love, excluding the Digitalius III, Mad Forest III, Amphibian III, and Bydo System Gamma. The rest of the Bydo Ships were implemented alongside DLC Set 4 on the 24th of February, 2022 for Consoles, and a few days thereafter on PC. The R-902 Ragnarok II, R-99 Last Dancer, R-100 Curtain Call, and R-101 Grand Finale were released in a surprise update on March 16th, 2022, and earlier the next day for the rest of the world.
As of March 17th, 2022, all 101 player craft found in the original Final are playable in Final 2, with 3 backer exclusive craft available to those that backed at the $500 tier, and plans for brand-new ships to be implemented in Final 3 and the future present.
