Doppelganger

Dobkeratops

This massive creature is a recurring Bydo and the most iconic foe of the R-Type Series. It has also been known by a great variety of names, including Krill, Krell, Doppleganger, Dopkeradops, Dobkeradobs, Double Keratops, Gladiator, etc. It resembles the artwork of H.R. Giger, of Alien fame; indeed, Dobkeratops bears a striking resemblance to that titular creature with both the elongated head and the "chest-burster" head. Though the attacks differ slightly from one incarnation to another, the middle part of the beast is the weak point. This is one of the widely recognized elements of R-Type; Dobkeratops is seen in many different forms in different artwork for the series, especially early on where nearly every game cover had a rendition of this famous beast. Since the Space Corps has encountered several species of Dobkeratops, they all have a unique scientific name.

Appearances[]

Boss-rtype1

This powerful half-creature half-weapon is a combination of electronics and Bydo biological technology. It guards the entrance to another dimension opened up in a destroyed space colony.

Dobkeratops appears at the end of the first stage.

Dobkeratops RT2

Built from the salvaged wreck of the Dobkeratops in R-Type, the Subatomic was created with planetary destruction in mind.

Dobkeratops has been rebuilt into Subatomic, also known as Zabtom, a well-armored variant that is touted as a planet-destroying weapon. The new form fights very similarly to the original, lacking a tail but keeping the weakpoint about halfway down the body. Destroying the creature's "helmet" reveals the original head of Dobkeratops. Due to Super R-Type's remixed stages, it is encountered slightly later into the mission. It appears shown from the front on R-Type II's cover art.

Dobkeratops R-Type III

Appears as one of the forms of Phantom Cell and is called Dobkeratops Albino. His first form is colored like the original in the first R-Type. He has extra spikes sticking out of his body and also at the end of his head.

In the Advanced mode second playthrough, Dobkeratops is colored black.

R-Type Delta Dobkeratops

A huge Bydo that should have been buried in the past. Resuscitation? Or...

It is known as Subkeratom in this mission, encountered in Awakening. This reincarnation of Dobkeratops becomes unconscious when its weakpoint gets extensively damaged (causing it to attack in retaliation) and will eventually engulf the pilot's ship if not defeated in time. When it is, it will wail, redden and graphically explode, leaving behind a blood smear where it once was.

Dobkeratops Finale

Sample specimen created for Bydo research. Dobkeratops Mattuchius is its scientific name. A sub-species that has been seen in former Bydo encounters, suspended in a large vat of unknown fluid. Its large size is likely because it is fed pure Bydo solution. Bacteria eat it from the inside and signs of decay are visible.

This incarnation of Dobkeratops functions differently than past incarnations, as the usual weak point is now protected by practically-indestructible scaffolds. The weak point here is the tongue of the creature. Once that is destroyed, the creature convulses, causing its rotten neck to tear apart and its head to fall off. The torso (or heart?), now revealed to be a nerve cluster, will shake off its scaffolds and and escape from the dying rest of its body. Taking a note from Bellmite and its pods, the cluster is protected by hardened cells and symbiotic parasites that will fly independently of the main body.

Ice-Bound Squirming One[]

  • Enemy Size/Strength: Huge Bydo
  • Enemy Classifications 1: Complex Species
  • Enemy Classifications 2: Terrestrial
  • HP: ★★★★
  • Stage: Abandoned Space City

Dobkeratops here is known as the 'Ice-bound Squirming One' and once again it appears as the boss of the first stage just like in earlier titles. Even though its body is almost frozen in ice, Dobkeratops' form is unmistakable. When playing on R-Typer, the creature itself appears to be completely thawed out of the ice, but its appearance is more closer to its appearance from the original R-Type when compared of that in lower difficulties (its appearance resembles that of one of the Dobkeratops from R-Type Command). It has two primary attacks: 1) spores burrow through the top and bottom, launching projectiles (or spews out a long trailing beam of bodily fluids from its mouth, if playing on R-Typer) and 2) a massive beam weapon that fires straight forward.

Ice-Bound Squirming One + (Dopkeratops)[]

  • Enemy Size/Strength: Huge Bydo
  • Enemy Classifications 1: Biological Species
  • Enemy Classifications 2: Terrestrial
  • HP: ★★★★
  • Stage: Stage X7.0 Encounter
Dopkeratops (with a 'p' instead of a 'b') is the boss of the DLC Homage stage X7.0, a re-visit of R-Type's first stage. Here, it's a fungal monster, constantly generating fungal blooms, bulbs, and tentacles. Its tail cannot move here, having grown into the ground, but it has a powerful forward-firing beam weapon that must be avoided despite how fast the combat environment can fill up with mushrooms and spores.

No less than 4 different species appear in this title. The first species is almost reminiscent of classic Dobkeratops, the second one has an almost purple color scheme unlike the one found in R-Type III: The Third Lightning's Advanced mode, the third is an semi-aquatic amphibious species, perhaps similar to the one encountered in R-Type Final, and finally there is a red-colored species encountered only during the Bydo Campaign. It is a tamed creature, created and raised under human control, and is the only known individual of its species; however, failed attempts at mass-producing it can be seen in the large tanks in the background of the Bestra Research Facility.

  • If you look closely on the arcade flyer, it had arms.
  • Despite having the title "Albino" in R-Type 3, It doesn't have Albinism, yet it still has it's orange pigmentation.
  • In R-Type Final, the Dobkeratops roar is actually the Red-Tailed Hawk screech blended with a roar. The hawk screech was pitched up in R-Type Final 2 for both Dobkeratops, Subtom Nonosis, & Dopkeratops δ.
